Immortality - I Think Therefore I Am (2001) Beatdown / Death Metal from Kobe, Japan

Imagen
Formed in Kobe, Japan around 2000, IMMORTALITY were one of the darker and heavier names to emerge from the Japanese hardcore underground at the turn of the millennium. Their sound fused the blunt-force groove and physicality of beatdown hardcore with the brutality and darker atmosphere of death metal, creating a punishing hybrid that was difficult to categorize but impossible to ignore. IMMORTALITY delivered a seriously heavy statement with I Think Therefore I Am, a four-track release that captures the darker, more metallic side of early-2000s beatdown hardcore. The riffs are thick and abrasive, moving between crushing mid-tempo grooves, heavy breakdowns and bursts of aggressive metallic intensity without losing the raw physicality of hardcore. I Think Therefore I Am is the kind of release that fits perfectly into the darker side of the early Japanese hardcore/beatdown underground. Blunt Force Trauma - Vengeance For Nothing (2012)

Imagen
Blunt Force Trauma’s Vengeance For Nothing is a straight-up slab of heavy, groove driven hardcore. Originally released in 2012, the EP leans heavily into the 90s beatdown mentality, with thick guitar work, stomping rhythms, brutal breakdowns and vocals delivered with a raw, confrontational edge. There’s a noticeable death metal influence in the vocals and overall heaviness, but the heart of the release remains firmly rooted in hardcore. GREATSWORD NW - Punish Game (Single EP August, 2026)

Imagen
Olympia, Washington’s GREATSWORD NW deliver a nasty dose of stripped-down beatdown hardcore with Punish Game. Built on thick, stomping riffs, mosh & heavy grooves and a hostile attitude, this is the kind of hardcore that doesn’t waste time trying to impress, it’s here to hit hard. GREATSWORD NW keep things firmly rooted in the oldschool beatdown mentality, where the riff comes first and every groove feels engineered for maximum pit damage. There’s a rawness that recalls the tougher side of late ’90s hardcore. Punish Game is short, mean and straight to the point. GREATSWORD NW are definitely a band worth keeping an eye on.
